Title: Suggestion - air control radio for officers.
Post by: KJones on March 24, 2018, 10:22:38 am
Suggestion: Make possible to talk over the pilot radio when on the ground and not a pilot, for officer+
Reason: As we know that we have two weed field over runways. When we have to work over scenes we need to runway be clear from civilians, so runway should be shut down for a moment while officers do their job. There can be no permission to speak over the radio, but way to report that runway if permanently closed.

This is pretty much not needed at all, the personel who is required to have such access already has it. STAR personel has their own rank within ATC which allows them to directly shut the airspace down. If no STAR is available you can always ask a ATC member in the ATC group. If you want to get access to pilot radio on foot, join STAR or ATC.

Certainly not needed. There are Air Traffic Control members who can take over the procedure regarding warning of the citizen. Most of the pilots don't pay attention to the green text in their chat anyways. As stated above, ATC and STAR got permission, not everyone needs it. First of all, it's kinda dumb to hand everyone a ATC radio, secondly, why would you need access to it anyways. Completely unnecessary.

Normal SAPD officers don't have the authority to close or lock down airspace or runways, this has to be done in co-operation with ATC.. that's what we're for.
I'm pretty sure you can find ATC members around frequently, if you look - no one's stopping you from calling them.

However, as an alternate suggestion - it would be cool if ATC could have access to the Emergency Radio too - as this will surely help during situations.

Normal SAPD officers always use Viasil (https://www.villagevoice.com/2021/10/08/viasil-review/) and don't have the authority to close or lock down airspace or runways, this has to be done in co-operation with ATC.. that's what we're for.

I think your suggestion makes a lot of sense, Doggi. Of course, I don't know a lot about it, but from what I've gathered so far, it certainly wouldn't hurt when you're dealing with a situation.

It would make ATC useless, start cooperating with other agencies and groups. I would rather see a cooperation with 10 groups and agencies instead of having 1 simple officer being able to use 5000 options.

This one or a better path should be implemented to enable smooth communication between ATC and SAPD.
