A common mistake.
« on: February 16, 2011, 00:02:39 am »
Hello. As I have noticed that many people commits some mistakes, that I see examples of it everyday. I will start with these:

I want to be SAPD - I want to be San Andreas Police Department - Correct usage: I want to be an officer/employee of the San Andreas Police Department.
I want to be FBI - I want to be Federal Bureau of Investigations - Correct usage: I want to be an agent/employee of the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Random Capital Letters - Random capital letters - Using capital letters in the middle randomly - Except when you invole a character's/group of persons. name. e.g: Diego. Or, the San Andreas Police Dept.

Generally, I want to be a [insert group name here] is not correct.

All I had in my mind now  :sheriff:

Discuss or add!

As you know, not all the residents of Argonath are from english as a first language nations, the fact is. The majority of them have a fundamental understanding of english, just enough to get them by and although is extremely important to me. It obviously does not impact too much on the presentation of a topic, that is unless it makes the reader unable to understand it.

Granted, a nicely and correctly typed topic looks better. On Argonath it is not a requirement to be 100% fluent, that is why we have such a large community.

I've learnt that correcting people for little mistakes (yes even the irritating capitals), is overly pointless unless they are willing to change. I recommend to simply teach by example.

And like Rockie, I lol'd too. If I really thought this was a factor detrimental to the operation of the ARPD than I would've made a massive topic by now.

I'm still trying to learn how not to use random capitals and use proper periods and other things. :P

I mean, if you look at your post.

-I want to be San Andreas Police Department
-Correct usage: I want to be an officer/employee of the San Andreas Police Department.

I can understand it if anyone says any of those two. I know even american people don't know proper grammar. So its not to blame other people for their mistake.

Sorry but no one will ever use those sentences. As long as you get what they mean, who cares how they say it?

And I see most of them say "I want to be in SAPD" not "I want to be SAPD"

Yeah those are common phrases.
Some other ones are:

How to be cop?

Can i be cop in this server?

I want to be cop.

Where to be cop?

Everyone can understand what there trying to say and help them out.

"I want to be apart of the SAPD"

"I want to be apart of the FBI"

And so on and so forth. I don't quite see how this is police related though, and despite that there are many people who do not have, as Sushi has stated, English as their primary (or first) language.

I don't see it as a mistake. If you want to be SAPD, you want to belong to the SAPD. It's virtually the same as saying you want to be in the SAPD.
No offence, but this is sort of being a failed grammar nazi.

Let me try.
As I have noticed that many people commits some mistakes, that I see examples of it everyday.
It doesn't make much sense to be honest.

There should be no 's' on the end of 'commit'. Also, you've used a comma inappropriately.
A more grammatically correct sentence would be: "I've noticed many people making these mistakes everyday.".

Nevertheless, I would have to agree with Sushi. Argonath is a vast community spanning from many countries located around the world. Perfect grammar, spelling, and punctuation are not going to happen. One common thing I see as an administrator of the server is newer players join and know little to know English. It becomes very hard to understand them at times, but we somehow get through it and try to explain to them what to do and what not to do. It doesn't really matter as long as you can understand what the person is trying to say.

Its the internet, where people from all around the world come to play, hang out, chill, or be with friends. There is no need for "proper grammar" here. So, until you have a major in the English language... then don't worry about it, it's that simple. No one is perfect, and those that think there are are the furthest from it... so just keep those first 3 words in mind... this is in fact.. the internet

Guys, he was just making it a point to discuss how people were incorrectly stating something. There's no need to blow up on him for it. Most of you may not remember because you haven't been here long enough, but back in the day, ARPD was very strict on making sure applications were free of errors. I understand that for some, English is new and they can't help it, but why would you automatically harass Rudy for bringing it up?

Thank you for the replies and the critics.

Well, I understand. But atleast having a half-fluent english will show professionalism. Anyways, I don't blame anyone, and anyone has a choice, to spell it wrong or right.

But as Jack said, don't harass me, I just pointed out some mistakes, and you don't encourage me for my effort? Other people don't bother creating this kind of topics. Want this locked? Fine.

Unlocked. There's no need for you to worry about being attacked here. If it does happen in this or any of your topics again, report them to a moderator using the post-based reporting system and we will deal with it. Everyone has an opinion, and whether it may apply to ARPD or not, they shouldn't have to worry about being attacked for it.
