No you don't need it. I advise not using it. It would probably lag the hell out of you.

Certain versions of the modification can lead to you being banned BUT there are versions that will not... Use common sense, read the readme, read the description before you download it. If it includes ANYTHING along the lines of "More realistic handling" more-over anything with the word "handling" in it I'd advise you DO NOT download it as it can get you banned...

Here's a link posted by the server owner, which I've tried out personally. It doesn't change the whole map but looks pretty neat. The trees are covered in snow and lands in the country side have a nice snow coat on them.
