Major Traffic Collision in Grady County Cairo, Georgia 39828
« on: November 05, 2009, 13:25:00 pm »
Early at 6:15, my mom was involved in a traffic collision. The collision happened at the intersection of MLK and 1st street. My mom was on the phone with me and my stepdad, who is a Grady County Sheriff, when she was totally silent for 8 seconds. She then yelled and screamed " I had a wreck, I had a wreck." My stepdad then put on his blue jeans and Sheriff Shirt and proceeded Code 3. When he got on scene, a pickup truck was there with a White Taurus. The whole left side of the Taurus was completly locked up and the pickup truck substained minimal damage. My mom, the victim, was completly unharmed except for some bumps and bruises. The suspect was charged with DUI and was transported to Grady County Detention Center on that following charge. The investigation will continue today at 8:00 after the wreckage is cleared.

Agreed.  I personally see that both your mom and the other guy have wrongs.  He was "driving under the influence" and your mom was on the cellphone.  Glad to hear she's alright though.  When I started reading the post, I thought the ending would've been a bit more horrific.  Thank God it wasn't.  I hope investigations progress smoothly into the matter.

My professional judgement?

The wreck could have been avoided from both sides.

The driver of the truck could have chose a designated driver, not been drinking in the first place, or your mother could have not been talking on the phone. Also, my personal opinion is that I would rather be driving next to a DRUNK than someone talking on their goddamn cellphone.

Talking on the cellphone while driving is like driving drunk, you are not paying attention to the road..

Not to sound unfair, but I think that crash could have been avoided if your mom wasn't on the phone, and paying attention to the road.

As stated by many before me, both were in the wrong. Your Mom should not have been on the phone, and the man, quite obviously, should not of been drink driving.

I'm glad to hear your Mom is alive and okay. Also, as Fred stated, I hope the investigation goes well.  ;)

The investigation is over. The man was booked on DUI charges, open container in a vehicle, possession of illegal narcotics(marijuana), and he also had no car or health insurance so he is being sued.

And your mom got a ticket for operating a motor vehicle while using a handheld device?

if the guy gets an attorney, the attorney can argue that both were in the wrong, and deserve equal punishment..

Glad to hear everyone's okay. Although unfortunate to hear, both should be punished for their crimes. Had one or both been following the laws, this could have been avoided. Then again, other factors also apply, but nonetheless I hope everyone learns their lesson from this.

P.S. Tell your mom that if she MUST talk on the phone while driving, to get a BlueTooth headset. There is NO excuse to be driving while on the phone without one. If she can't afford it, then she shouldn't be able to afford car insurance and gasoline either. Tell her to pull her shit together. If there is a next time, she might not get a second chance at avoiding a deadly crash, even if it's not her fault.
